Another Professional Tesla Charger Installation

We recently completed another domestic electric vehicle charging project, installing a new Tesla Wall Connector to provide the customer with a convenient, dependable and professionally protected home charging point.

The charger was positioned neatly on the external brick wall beside the garage, giving the customer easy access when parking while keeping the charging cable organised and ready for everyday use.

Installing an EV charger involves much more than simply attaching the unit to the wall. The existing electrical installation must be assessed, the proposed cable route must be planned and suitable protection must be provided for the dedicated charging circuit.

For this project, we installed a dedicated consumer unit incorporating PEN fault protection. We then completed the required inspection, testing and electrical assessment to confirm that the finished installation was safe and ready for continued use.

What Was Included in the Installation?

The charger, electrical protection and assessment were completed as one coordinated installation rather than treating the charger as a standalone appliance.

The Tesla charger was securely mounted in a practical location that allows the charging cable to reach the vehicle comfortably without creating an obstruction around the garage.

Dedicated Consumer Unit

A separate consumer unit was installed specifically for the EV charging equipment, providing suitable circuit protection and clear isolation from the remainder of the property’s circuits.

PEN Fault Protection

The installation incorporates PEN fault protection, helping protect the user and vehicle if an open PEN conductor fault develops within the incoming electrical supply.

Dedicated Consumer Unit With PEN Fault Protection

Electric vehicle chargers can place a substantial electrical demand on a property, particularly when the vehicle is charging for several hours. The charging circuit must therefore be designed correctly and protected by equipment suited to EV charging.

For this installation, a dedicated consumer unit was fitted to house the protective equipment for the Tesla Wall Connector. Separating the charger circuit in this way makes the installation easier to identify, isolate, inspect and maintain.

PEN fault protection is especially important where an EV charger is connected to a TN-C-S electrical supply. In the event of a problem with the combined protective earth and neutral conductor, dangerous voltage could potentially appear on exposed conductive parts.

The protection equipment monitors the electrical supply and disconnects the charger when conditions indicate a potentially unsafe PEN fault. This provides an important additional safety measure without requiring a separate earth electrode in installations where the selected equipment provides compliant built-in or external protection.
